China Builds 75% of the World's EVs - Here's Why It Matters

2026-10-16

The number that should anchor every Chinese-EV sourcing decision in 2026 is not a price. It is a share: China builds roughly 75% of the world's electric vehicles and about two of every three batteries.

That scale is not a slogan. It is the reason a Chinese EV can absorb a 45% tariff and still undercut a legacy rival on your showroom floor. The cost curve is driven by the world's deepest cell supply, the most integrated component chain, and factories that have already amortized the tooling. Subsidy stories miss this - the discount is structural, not temporary.

For an importer, three reads from the supply-chain share. One - pricing power sits with the maker, not the middleman. When one country controls the cells, the pack and the platform, it sets the floor. Your job is to capture that floor, not negotiate against it. Two - supply security. A disruption in one plant does not break the line when capacity is this deep. That is why Chinese EV supply stayed abundant while legacy supply chains stalled. Three - the edge travels. Even a Chinese brand assembling in your region inherits the cheaper, deeper chain upstream.

The trap is treating Chinese EVs as a passing price advantage. They are a manufacturing monopoly in slow motion, and the tariff wall only accelerates the local-plant response. A brand with both the scale and a plant in your region is the safest long-term bet on your shelf.

So before you quote: have you priced in China's 75% share - or are you still negotiating as if the advantage were fragile?
