Stop Chasing the Premium Chinese EV. The Volume Is in the $15K Class.

2026-10-23

Unpopular opinion for distributors: the premium Chinese EV is the trophy, but the $15K class is the business. Chasing the flagship while ignoring the budget tier is how importers miss the volume - and the inquiries.

Look at what actually moves. The models clearing certification and filling showrooms across Southeast Asia, Latin America and Africa are not the $40K flagships - they are the sub-$20K-FOB hatches and crossovers that fit local incomes and local commuting. That is where the units - and the cost-per-inquiry that your Facebook campaigns live on - actually compound.

The premium play has its place: margin per unit, brand halo, easier entry into open wealthy markets. But it is a thinner slice. Bet your whole floor on it and you wait for fewer, slower buyers while the budget tier sells around you.

The smart read is a layered floor: a budget hero that drives volume and inquiries, a mid-tier model that defends margin, and maybe one flagship for the halo. Most importers I see win with the first two and treat the third as optional.

My stand: lead with the class that moves. The $15K EV is not the cheap option - it is the volume engine, and volume is what pays for the rest.

So ask yourself: is your floor built around the cars that actually sell in your market - or around the ones that look impressive in a brochure?
